Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of cognition —thinking systems— whether human or machine. It brings together AI and machine learning, math, informatics, neuroinformatics, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, logic, computational linguistics, and everything in between.
As soon as I heard about this field, I was immediately hooked. I quit electrical engineering after five semesters to embark on this journey, and it ended up profoundly shaping my life.
What I find really powerful about this holistic approach to understanding cognition is how deeply connected these seemingly separate fields are. Neuroscience, for example, helps you understand the human brain, but it also lays the foundation to understand the very essence of neuroinformatics and artificial neural networks—and to truly grasp how and why "machine learning" works. These interconnections run throughout cognitive science, always feeding into each other in a multidirectional way.
My Field of focus: During my studies, I focused on AI, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and probabilistic models.
